Generic: Glipizide

Class: Sulfonylureas

Action: Lowers blood glucose acutely by stimulating the release of insulin from the pancreas, an effect dependednt upon functioning beta cells in the pancreatic islets. Helps pancreas produce make more insulin and allows cells to use insulin better.

Duration: Glucotrol: Starts 90 min. Lasts 12-16 hours Glucotrol XL: Starts 2-3 hours lasts 16-24 hours

Timing: Glucotrol 30 min before same meal daily Glucotrol XL: Best if taken 30 minutes before eating.

Side Effects: Risk of low blood pressure, hypoglycemia, dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, gas, and skin rashes.

Precautions: Do not skip meals Use lower doses if you have kidney or liver disease.
