  Glucophage, Glucophage XR

Generic: Metformin hydrochloride tablet

Class: (Biguanides)

Action: Decreases glucose release from liver. Glucophage is an antihyperglycemic agent, which improves glucose tolerance in patients with type 2 diabetes, lowering both basal and postprandial plasma glucose. Metformin decreases hepatic glucose production, decreases intestinal absorption of glucose, and improves insulin sensitivity by increasing peripheral glucose uptake and utilization. With metformin insulin secretion remains unchanged while fasting insulin levels and day long plasma insulin response may actually decrease. Glucophage and Glucophage XR as monotherapy are indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Glucophage and Glucophage XR are used to treat type 2 diabetes. People with type 2 diabetes are not able to make enough insulin or respond to the insulin their bodies make.

Duration: 6 hours

Timing: Take with food to increase absorption

Side Effects: Nausea, Diarrhea, Gas

Precautions: Do not take if you have liver or kidney problems. Check with your doctor prior to radiological studies involving intravascular administration of iodinate contrast materials.
