Generic: Glimepiride Tablets

Class:(Sulfonylureas)

Supplied in: It is dispensed in 1mg, 2mg and 4mg strengths for oral administration.

Action Amaryl is an oral blood glucose lowering drug of the sylfonylurea class. The primary mechanism of action of glimepiride in lowering blood glucose appears to be dependent on stimulating the release of insulin from functioning pancreatic beta cells. In addition extra pancreatic effects may also play a role in the activity of Sulfonylureas such as glimepiride. It is absorbed in the GI tract. It is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise to lower the blood glucose in patients with no insulin dependent TypeII diabetes whose hyperglycemia cannot be controlled by diet and exercise alone. It is not indicated for use in combination with insulin to lower blood glucose in patient whose hyperglycemia cannot be controlled by diet and exercise in conjunction with an oral hypoglycemic agent.

Caloric restriction: weight loss and exercise are essential while taking Amaryl.

Duration: Starts in 2-3 hours and lasts up to 24 hours.

Timing: Take with first meal in the day.

Side Effects: Risk of low blood sugars

Precautions: Lower doses on patients that have existing liver disease
